INFORMATION FOR PILGRIMS ATTENDING
THE GLASTONBURY PILGRIMAGE
SUNDAY 11th JULY 2010

The theme of this year’s Pilgrimage is

“MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH”

The Pilgrimage has a choice of beginnings; in St Mary’s church, for those who do not wish to take part in the Rosary Procession, or in the Abbey grounds for those taking part in the Pilgrimage Procession, through the Town, returning to the Abbey for the Mass.
Please note that the procession starts in the Abbey grounds; there is no start at Glastonbury Tor this year.
If you are able, please bring your parish and organisation banners and carry them in the procession.

Afterwards, during Mass, they will be displayed at the side of the Altar.

In the Church

Rosary: 1.00pm

You are invited to visit St Mary’s Church, the Shrine of Our Lady of Glastonbury, to join prayer of the Rosary at 1.00pm, followed by

Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Confessions and Healing Prayer: 1.30pm.

For those pilgrims not wishing to join the procession, in the church there will be a Holy Hour during which there will be Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, during which Confessions will be heard by visiting priests. At the same time, members of the Shrine Healing Ministry will be available to give private Healing Prayer to those who would like to receive it.

Benediction: 2.00pm
These ministries will conclude with Benediction at about 2.00pm to give attendees time to make their way to the Abbey before the procession arrives at the Abbey Gate at about 3.00pm

In the Abbey Grounds

Those Pilgrims wishing to take part in the procession should assemble in the Abbey grounds at 1.45pm, to prepare for the procession which will start at 2.15pm

The Rosary Procession: 2.00pm

At 2.00pm Father Alan Finlay will lead the Rosary procession from the Abbey, exiting the Abbey grounds at the top of town, and will process through the centre of Glastonbury via the High Street, returning to the Abbey through the main entrance gate at about 3.00pm.
Parish Priests are invited to join the procession.

Mass in the Abbey Grounds: 3.30pm

The procession of Pilgrims arrives at the Main Abbey Gate at 3.00pm.
At 3.30pm Bishop Declan Lang will concelebrate Mass.

The 2010 Pilgrimage Mass will include a Sacramental Anointing of the Sick; a very special sacrament for any
Pilgrims who wish to receive it, in the tradition of Pilgrimage.

Pilgrims should note that the Sacramental Anointing will extend the Mass by approximately 30 minutes.

In the Abbey, areas near the centre aisle will be set aside for the handicapped and near the front for those with impaired hearing, for whom an induction loop system will be available.

Please be guided by the stewards during the distribution of Holy Communion.

There will be an offertory collection during Mass, towards the upkeep of the Shrine of Our Lady of Glastonbury.

A collection will also be taken at the gate as you depart after Mass, for those missed during the offertory.

 Stewards assistance: three key locations:

When you arrive in Glastonbury there will be stewards present at three locations; the coach de-bussing point in Bere Lane, at St Mary’s Church, and in the Abbey grounds. Identifiable by the gold ‘Stewards’ armbands or Knights collars they will be wearing, they will be happy to answer any queries you may have.

Badges and Programmes. Pilgrimage Medals

The sticker badges, which you must wear to gain entry to the Abbey grounds, can be obtained from the stewards on duty at these key locations. Programmes containing full details of the Mass in the Abbey grounds, are also available from the stewards, in return for a donation (£1.00 is suggested) towards Pilgrimage expenses. Programmes can also be obtained at tables positioned by St Mary’s Church and in the Abbey grounds, where Pilgrimage Medals, Rosaries, postcards, prayer cards, candles and other gifts may also be purchased.

The words for the hymns and prayers on the procession will be in a separate booklet, available to those wishing to take part.

Refreshments, Toilet facilities and Safety:

Light refreshments, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, will be available from a tea-tent in the Abbey grounds, until half an hour before the Mass commences and again directly after the Mass.

Toilet facilities will be available for all in the Abbey grounds.

Members of St John’s Ambulance Brigade will be on duty.

General consideration:

As you will be guests of the owner of the Tor field and the Trustees of Glastonbury Abbey, will you please treat their property with respect, leaving it in good order and free from litter.
